"It's An Off The Wall Weekend!"
It's the track that's... "To Tough To Tame"..."The Lady in Black"...many insiders call it"The Black Bitch!"
Why the Black Bitch?....track is black and it's a bitch to get around for 500 miles.
Darlington is different than any other track on the schedule. First, you race the track, and the track usually wins! Then, you worry about the competition. It's safe to say that the hardest working person at Darlington is the man in charge of painting the wall!
The famed Darlington stripe (it's the scrap left on the car after you hit the wall) will be featured on many cars this weekend, and with practice getting rained out Thursday Night, it's a green track for practice. Meaning the groove is gone and at Darlington, there is only ONE groove.
The original schedule had the Cup cars practicing Thursday night, now they had to practice Friday morning, with qualifying in the late afternoon. Then, Nascar will impound the cars until the race Saturday night under the lights.
That means just about everybody is going into this baby scratching their head! Taking care of your tires, and having flawless pit stops, is what's going to make the difference. It'll be a long night for a lot of teams.
This track eats tires, like the cast of "Lost" would eat, if a Waffle House just opened on the island.
There are many fond memories of Darlington, like 25 years ago, pitching a tentnext to Ramsey's pond, watching my best friend Mark Mosher, take just about everyone's money in a late night poker game, that was reminiscent to a card game in the Old West, dodging Roman Candles (fireworks are legal in SC), and watching the race under that tin roof that covered the front grandstands.
I doubt this Palmetto Party under the Lights, can hold a candle to watching Bill Elliot become "Million Dollar Bill" by winning in1985, when he wheeled that #9 Coors Ford in the sports first million dollar payday, but I can guarantee it won't be boring.
Darlington never is, not when, at any moment, the "black bitch" can reach out, snatch a $300,000 race car, and re-arrange the sheet metal just for kicks.
