"Watkins Glen vs. Tony Stewart"
He's got the momentum of a cement truck with a full load going downhill with no brakes...That's one way to describe Tony Stewart's season so far. After the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet helped Tony fulfill a lifelong dream last Sunday at Indianapolis. He now comes to the fastest road course on the Nextel Cup schedule as the defending champion.
"Smoke" takes a 75-point edge in the Nextel Cup point standings. Of course, that margin means very little in the larger scale, since NASCAR is once again going to realign the top 10 for the final 10 races. Which is just five races away.
Mark Martin has led 204 laps at Watkins Glen, more than any other driver. Jeff Gordon has led 173 laps there. Martin has competed in 17 Watkins Glen races, Gordon in 12.
The keys to being successful at Watkins Glen are qualifying well, keeping yourself up front with solid pit strategy and staying on the course. If you can do all of that, you’re almost guaranteed to have a good finish.
Watkins Glen May Spell Trouble for Some of the Top 10
• Jimmie Johnson has scored only one top-10 finish at Watkins Glen International.
• Greg Biffle has finished 30th or worse in his two races at Watkins Glen International.
• Rusty Wallace has finished 17th or worse in his last five races at Watkins Glen International.
• Carl Edwards has never competed at Watkins Glen International.
